It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, you can have a big clearout in your home. There doesn’t even have to be a specific reason for decluttering, and it’s actually just a good, regular habit to get into. If you declutter your entire house every six months or so, you’ll find it’s a much more comfortable place to live.

Yet knowing that you need to declutter and even knowing how beneficial it will be for you and your family is sometimes not enough to get you motivated. You’ll keep putting off the job if you don’t know how to start. With that in mind, here are some great ways to help you eliminate clutter from your home.

Know Where Things Are Going

Before you begin decluttering, it’s a good idea to have an idea about what you will do with the things you’re removing from your home. It might be tempting just to throw it all in the trash, but since this is wasteful and bad for the environment, it’s better to leave this idea as a last resort.

You might decide to donate items, for example. This will help you by removing them from your home, and it will help whomever you give them to. Or perhaps you could sell things; even if they’re not worth much individually, you could make a decent amount of cash if you have a lot to sell. If you’re unsure what to do or want to keep the items but do not have room for them in your home, the ideal option is to hire a unit from StorageArea. In this way, you can think about what to do with the things later or keep them for as long as you want, and your home will still be clutter-free.

Start With Your Closet

When you start decluttering, beginning with your closet is a good idea. This is where you’ll find most things you no longer want, and not only will it clear out a lot of space, but it will make you feel as though you’re achieving something, and that will help you feel motivated to tackle other areas of your home when you’re finished with your clothing.

Take everything out of your closet and arrange it into three piles. One to keep (with at home or in storage), one to donate, and one to throw out. If anything no longer fits, or you simply don’t like it anymore, or perhaps if you never wore it in the first place, it should go. Make this a rule, and you’ll easily get through the task.

Rearrange Your Garage

If you have a garage, you’ll know that this is where a lot of your junk goes when you’re not quite sure what to do with it. The problem is that this means your garage isn’t a usable space. Wouldn’t it be great if you could turn it into a home office, a gym, a quiet room, a playroom, or even another bedroom? When you declutter, you can do just that.

If you have a plan for what your garage could be once it is empty, you’ll be happier to take the plunge and declutter. If you’re finding it hard to know where to put things, the storage unit idea is always a good one. Still, you could also create a loft space in the garage to give you more storage but keep the room clear.
