Creating a truly functional workspace can be a challenge. Read on for tips on how to create a cosy study that has multiple practical properties, while remaining a creative place where you can focus perfectly.

Create a working oasis

Longing for a cosy bookshelf to store all your books in? Choose a bookcase with a closing door. You’ll especially appreciate a library door when it comes to cleaning. Your books will stay safe and you won’t have to spend a lot of time vacuuming and wiping them every time you clean!

Reading nooks are great too, if you have the space. This calming little reading oasis deserves a really good, stylish, and comfortable chair. A larger piece of furniture will visually break up the room and give you a comfortable retreat for long evenings of quality reading. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild when choosing one. Bolder patterns and colours will brighten up the room perfectly.

Natural light takes precedence

Natural light is best for working, so ideally the desk should be as close to a window as possible. Try to keep the top of your desk free of clutter. Research shows that too much stuff on your desk can be distracting and take you away from important tasks. Don’t be afraid to put storage spaces on, or under, your desk to hide excess items. You can reach for bins and boxes made from recycled paper, for example. Specially designed boxes that hide cables are also great.

Even artificial lighting is important

In addition to plenty of daylight, don’t forget about artificial light. A well-placed desk lamp or a larger floor lamp will help you concentrate better. Don’t forget that the colour of the light also has a big impact on our productivity. While a warmer shade of light is calming, a colder one promotes productivity and alertness. So for a desk lamp, it’s ideal to get a bulb with a temperature between 5,000 and 7,000K. And how do you give a room soul and the right atmosphere? The decoration you choose yourself will best exude your personality and style. You’ll be able to sleep and work more easily in your study or bedroom.

Plants that can do a lot

Live plants should definitely not be missing from your work corner. They bring a freshness to the whole space and can also help you get away from staring at a monitor all day. Spruce up your wall shelf with a load of overhanging plants, or get one larger plant in a funky pot to stand next to the desk. You’ll find that a few minutes of relaxation with your eyes fixed on the greenery will relieve your eyes and kick-start your creativity. Some species can also clean and humidify the air. If you don’t want to worry about killing your new plants, choose ones that are undemanding and just water them when you remember.
