It’s official! There’s a high-schooler in the house!
At first, that might seem a little strange and both you and your child may feel nervous about this new life stage. To help shake the study nerves, here are our top 10 effective study tips for high school students!
1.Minimise Distractions
When it’s time to study, put everything else away. Make sure the family knows that you are studying and they should only bother you if the house is on fire.
Be sure to turn off your phone or mute notifications as well.
2.Make Good Use of Your Time
Don’t waste study time by being unfocused. You might spend a lot of time with your book, but you won’t be learning anything.
Build solid exam study habits with the Pomodoro method. Set a timer for 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off and go a few rounds. Knowing that you’ll get that 5-minute break helps you knuckle down for your study session.
3.Get the Study Juices Flowing
What if you just can’t focus? Here’s a tip. Start your study session by reading some thought-provoking content that you find interesting.
Then slide into your textbook. You’ll find that your brain is more ready and able to switch into study mode now.
4.Create Exciting Notes
Notes sometimes feel like busywork, but the mere act of writing information down helps you remember it better. Take it one step further by dressing up your notes with colours, doodles, graphs, pictures, and anything else that helps you tie concepts together and remember them.
5.Get Some Exercise
Feel like you’re in a fog? Take a brisk walk or run up and down the stairs a few times to activate your brain.
In general, schedule some kind of physical activity every day. Whether it’s a full-on gym session or a dance party in your living room, exercise will stimulate your brain and benefit you in every aspect of your health.
6.Get Some Sunshine
If you’re like most people, you already spend most of your time hidden away from the sun. Make an effort to get a few minutes of sunshine each day. This stimulates your body to produce Vitamin D, an essential vitamin for mental health — which helps you study better.
7.Spend Time with the Fam
Social time is just as important as study time. As social creatures, we humans don’t do well without proper interaction. So, forget about studying for a little while and have some fun with your favourite people!
8.Edit Later
Finish your papers with enough time to edit them at least 24 hours later. When you edit immediately upon finishing, your brain is more likely to automatically replace errors with what is supposed to be there.
9.Put Your Deadlines on the Wall
It’s stressful trying to keep track of all your deadlines in your head. Not to mention, it’s so easy to forget one.
Put all your deadlines up on a wall calendar where you can easily see them. It will make your life so much easier.
10.Snacks!
Have healthy, brain-food type snacks on hand for long study sessions. Choose delights like nuts and fruit that will fuel your brain and avoid sugary snacks that will make you crash.
