It is important to maintain electric safety tips because if handled callously, electrical appliances can turn out to be dangerous. Lack of electrical safety knowledge and electrical oversights can lead to unwanted accidents.

This guide will help you gain knowledge about some basic electric safety tips. Enjoy all the electrical appliances without the fear of any electric accidents.

1.All the Electrical Appliances Should Be Working Properly

One of the main reasons for short circuits is that the appliance you are using is not working properly or is not plugged in properly. Any appliance that has some issue in working properly, takes up a lot of electricity to work and leads to a short circuit.

Make sure that there are no malfunctions in any of your appliances before you use them. Better yet, unplug all the appliances that are not being used. This will not only save electricity but also save you from any potential shocks.

2.Switch The Main Power Off During Maintenance Activities

While there are electrical maintenance services going on, make sure that the main power supply switch is turned off. There is a risk of shocks and accidents in case the main switch is left on.

In case there is a small power outlet maintenance issue, switch the plug point off of that appliance and then work on it.

3.Keep Water Away From Electric Equipments

Electricity and water do not go well together. Keep all the electronic devices away from water to prevent any shocks or electrocution to you. Touch the eclectic appliances with dry hands only.

If water enters any electronic device, there is a chance that it won’t work properly. Therefore, keep the electronic devices away from sinks, aquariums, bathtubs, showers, etc. You can ensure if your switches are flame retardant from your electrical modular boxes manufacturer.

4.Always Have A Fire Extinguisher

Always keep a fire extinguisher handy in your home in case of any accidental fires due to a short circuit. Never use water to extinguish the fire caused due to electricity because it is a good conductor of electricity and can increase the fire.

5.Replace the Damaged Electrical Cords

Damaged electrical cords pose a serious risk for catching and causing a fire. They can even electrocute a person. You should get the damaged cords replaced or repaired to avoid any hazards. Make sure that the cords are not placed in a location where someone can trip over them.

6.Don’t Use Extension Cords for Prolonged Time

Extension cords should not be used for longer times because they are good for temporary use and not permanent use. Prolonged use of extension cords can overheat them and lead to small fires.

If you have frequent use of extension cords, then you can choose to call an electrician to add more outlets to your room.

7.Avoid Overloading An Outlet

Make sure that you don’t overload a single outlet because every outlet has a certain amount of energy that it can take. If you plug multiple devices into the same outlet, there is a risk of a short circuit. However, most of the time, overloading will lead to tripping of your main switch to avoid the short circuit.

You should consider rearranging your appliances into different outlets so that you don’t put stress on a single outlet.

8.Keep All Your Cords Stored Securely

To prevent any damage, you should keep the used cords and the unused cords stored securely. You must keep the cords away from the reach of children and pets so that they don’t chew on them.

Ensure that you don’t wrap the cords too tight because they will stretch or get overheated. Do not place any cord on a hot surface to avoid any harm to its insulation.

9.Keep the Exhaust Fans Clean to Avoid Fire Hazards

Certain appliances come with exhaust fans that can become dirty after use which makes it difficult for the appliance to work properly. This does not only pose the risk of the appliance damaging but also increases the risk of overheating.

Sometimes the buildup of dangerous gases can cause a fire hazard. Keep the exhaust fans clean to avoid such fire hazards.

10.Follow the Appliance Instructions Given for Electrical Safety

You should read the instructions carefully before installing or using any electrical appliance for safety purposes. Following the instructions properly can enhance the performance and life of the appliance. It will also prevent any shocks or short circuits.

In case there is a small electric shock, turn off the appliance immediately and call for a professional electrician to look at it.

11.Provide Proper Space for Air Circulation to Your Appliances

If your appliance does not have proper space for air circulation, it can overheat and cause a short circuit. Make sure that your appliances have enough space for the air to pass through to avoid electrical fire hazards. Avoid placing appliances inside cabinets to avoid overheating the appliances.

12.Use Appliances At Or Below The Maximum Wattage

Use lightbulbs, tube lights, and other electrical equipment at or below the maximum wattage because if your outlet can’t take the load, it will cause a short circuit. If not a short circuit, it will lead to overheating of the electrical appliances.

The wattage will be mentioned on the product or its package. Make sure that you are buying an appliance below the maximum wattage of your outlet.

Conclusion

You must already have practiced fire safety, but it is better to learn fire prevention. Keep yourself and your family protected from accidental fires due to electrical systems. Keep the above-mentioned tips in your mind to ensure your safety.
