Things to expect from Lead Paint InspectionThings to expect from Lead Paint Inspection

For major homeowners, lead in the house is a major concern. Lead has affected physical and mental health for quite a long time and this is true for kids who have a high risk of lead exposure.

Houses made before 1978

In 1978, lead paint was banned in homes and condominiums. While this was a progress, it didn’t address the properties which were already plagued with lead paint. Lead paint gets troublesome when disturbed from weathering or wear. Hence, it is recommended to identify the problem areas with professional help. Without the right safety gear, proper knowledge and training, you shouldn’t disturb an area. A lead inspection will help you prevent issues down the road.

What to expect from a lead paint inspection?

While a lot of homeowners may think of conducting lead inspection on their own, it is recommended to hire a professional for effective results. The EPA sets rigid rules and laws and guidelines which the inspectors should follow. They also need lead inspector accreditations that ensure secure practices and diligence from chosen experts that conduct the inspection. While lead risk assessor accreditations are needed for this task.

Contractors who work in houses and commercial properties with lead containing material should have EPA trained staff. In case they don’t, it may lead to severe penalties. There are two models for lead inspection:

  • Lead paint inspection: In lead inspection, the surface of the inside and outside is checked to know where toxic lead paint is sited. Inspectors with training assess problem areas and conduct inspection even in the difficult to spot area. While lead is toxic, it is only harmful when damaged or disturbed. So, if the lead paint is in good condition, and doesn’t have the risk of being disturbed, it can be left like that.
  • Lead risk assessment: On the other hand, a lead risk assessment is all about informing the owner about lead hazards on the property. The evaluation aims to get lead levels and how serious the problem is. People with training should do an on-site assessment to know the presence, severity and nature of lead paint threats. It also includes a plan of action to deal with lead paint hazards for a safer future.

Why are lead inspections so essential?

Lead paint can lead to poisoning which can be severely harmful to specific people such as kids. Children are likely to be prey to lead exposure and lead poisoning. It depends on several factors such as hand to mouth behavior, the speed with which lead gets absorbed in their blood, any condition from before etc. can make lead more hazardous for kids.

According to health experts, children may face several risk factors and symptoms when exposed to lead which includes delay in development, weight loss, vomiting, loss of hearing, irritability, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, seizures and more.

Hence, it is very essential for homeowners to take the right precautionary steps and keep their household secure. Lead inspections and assessment can identify the troubled areas and plan for a safer future.
